Fellowship Information
The primary training goal of this post Graduate fellowship is to improve patient care and teach advanced robotic/laparoscopic/endoscopic operative skills to individuals who are interested in propagating the field of minimally invasive surgery, while honing skills regarding complex/emergency General Surgery.
The Florida Surgical Specialists Enhanced Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship is based upon a very busy clinical practice of General Surgery, especially foregut, hernia and colorectal surgery with intensive clinical research. There will be strong focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
We have a very high volume practice and at the forefront of technology/innovation for both minimally invasive and open operations. Dr. Paul Toomey, program director, is a pioneer in robotic surgery with experience in over 1100 robotic operations.
We will offer 1-2 positions starting July and August of each year, for graduates of accredited General Surgery training programs in the United States. This one-year program is designed for surgeons who want to increase their knowledge and technical skills in advanced laparoscopic/robotic operations and advanced GI Surgery/Colorectal Surgery. The program includes clinical, academic, and research components.
The goals of the one-year fellowship are:
Train fellows in the application of the following techniques of advanced GI Surgery for foregut, abdominal wall and colorectal diseases:
- Robotic Surgery
- Endo-luminal Surgery
- Emergency General Surgery
- “Open”, complex GI Surgery
Prepare fellows to be leaders in Surgery and for careers in Surgery by:
- Providing guidance for the development of independent research.
During the fellowship, extensive experience is gained in flexible endoscopy, including diagnostic, therapeutic, and advanced upper/lower endoscopy of the GI tract.
The clinical activity of the fellowship is undertaken at all training facilities served by Florida Surgical Specialists. Florida Surgical Specialists serve three hospitals and two ambulatory surgery centers in Manatee and Sarasota Counties:
- HCA Florida Blake Hospital (383 bed tertiary hospital)
- Manatee Memorial Hospital (295-bed hospital in Bradenton, FL)
- Lakewood Ranch Medical Center (120-bed hospital in Bradenton, FL)
- Manatee Surgical Center

Fellowship Graduates
Dr. Addison P. Roberts, D.O.
Dr. Addison P. Roberts is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He earned his medical degree from A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012. Dr. Roberts completed his general surgery residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in 2016, followed by a fellowship at Florida Surgical Specialists in 2021. He is currently practicing in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he is affiliated with Oklahoma Surgical Hospital and Saint Francis Health System. Dr. Roberts is dedicated to providing patient-centered care, utilizing advanced surgical techniques to improve outcomes and recovery times.
Dr. Jaclyn P. Malat, D.O.
Dr. Jaclyn P. Malat is a board-certified minimally invasive general and colorectal surgeon. She obtained her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she also completed her general surgery residency, serving as Chief Resident in 2021. Dr. Malat further specialized by completing a robotics fellowship focused on colorectal surgery at Florida Surgical Specialists. She is currently practicing in Flemington, New Jersey, at Hunterdon Surgical Associates. Dr. Malat emphasizes patient-centered care, close communication, and a team-based approach, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to enhance patient outcomes and reduce recovery times.
Dr. Yarret Robles Torres, MD
Dr. Yarret Robles Torres is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Robles Torres completed his general surgery residency at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, where he developed a keen interest in advanced laparoscopic techniques. He further honed his skills by completing a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Dr. Robles Torres is currently practicing in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he is affiliated with Hospital De Damas. He is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered care, utilizing the latest surgical advancements to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Bradley Gaddis, DO
Dr. Bradley Gaddis is a board-certified general surgeon with specialized training in advanced laparoscopic and robotic procedures. He obtained his medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015. Dr. Gaddis completed his general surgery residency at Hackensack Meridian Health – Palisades Medical Center in New Jersey, where he served as chief resident. Following residency, he pursued a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery at Florida Surgical Specialists in Bradenton. Currently, Dr. Gaddis practices with Orlando Health Medical Group Surgery in Winter Garden, Florida, and serves as a surgeon for the Orlando Health Complex Hernia Center. His clinical interests include hernia repair, foregut surgery, and colorectal procedures. Dr. Gaddis is committed to utilizing minimally invasive techniques to enhance patient recovery and outcomes.
Dr. Umashankkar Kannan
Dr. Umashankkar Kannan, M.D., M.B.A., FACS, DABOM, is a distinguished board-certified general
surgeon and fellowship-trained minimally invasive bariatric surgeon based in New York City. He
is the Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine, New York Medical College,
and an integral part of the surgical team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan.
Dr. Kannan earned his medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India, and completed
his general surgery residency at BronxCare Health System in New York. He later pursued advanced
training through the Florida Surgical Specialists Enhanced General Surgery Fellowship under the
guidance of Dr. Paul Toomey, becoming the program’s first fellow. Following this, he further
specialized by completing a bariatric fellowship.
With expertise in minimally invasive and robotic techniques, Dr. Kannan focuses on bariatric and
metabolic surgery, utilizing cutting-edge technology to improve patient outcomes. He has contributed
extensively to research and medical literature, authoring publications on advanced surgical techniques
and innovative approaches to patient care.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kannan is committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation
of surgeons. He has developed a robotic surgery curriculum for residents and is actively involved in
medical education at New York Medical College and Metropolitan Hospital.
Dr. Kannan’s dedication to excellence, innovation, and patient care makes him a leader in minimally
invasive and bariatric surgery. He is also recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
