Dr. Umashankkar Kannan is a distinguished surgeon with a robust academic and professional background, including his role as the inaugural fellow of the Florida Surgical Specialists Enhanced General Surgery Fellowship: Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Foregut, Hernia, and Colorectal Fellowship from 2019 to 2020. He is board-certified in general surgery and a fellowship-trained expert in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, specializing in bariatrics, foregut, colorectal, and hernia surgery.

Dr. Kannan further advanced his expertise with a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital in New York, NY, where he refined his skills in advanced surgical techniques.

He holds an M.B.A. in Management from Mercy University, where he was inducted into Delta Mu Delta, the international honor society for business administration. He completed his residency in general surgery at BronxCare Health System and has additional training from Maimonides Medical Center, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he earned a Master’s in General Surgery. He began his medical career by earning his M.B.B.S. from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kannan has served as a Clinical Fellow at Mount Sinai Morningside, an attending surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals, and a faculty member at New York Medical College. His commitment to education includes teaching general surgery residents and devising robotic surgery curricula.

Dr. Kannan has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals, reflecting his contributions to advancing surgical techniques and patient care. He is a member of esteemed organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM).

With a career dedicated to innovation, education, and patient-centered care, Dr. Kannan continues to make significant contributions to the field of advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
